That is the useful reality check: even for the records everyone wants, there are about 4 times as many copies in circulation as people looking for one. A standard pressing of a famous album is common, not scarce, whatever its age.

How to read the results. Each card is a specific pressing. The lowest price is the cheapest copy currently listed, so a clean copy is usually worth more. For sale is scarcity, and own vs want is demand: when far more collectors want a record than own it, and few are for sale, the value tends to rise. Sealed and Near Mint copies command a big premium over worn ones.
Four things decide what a record is worth, in roughly this order: condition, whether it is an original first pressing or a later reissue, how rare and in-demand the title is, and whether the cover and inserts are complete. Age on its own barely matters.
1. Condition (the Goldmine grading scale)
Condition is the single biggest factor, and value drops fast as it falls. Collectors and dealers grade to this standard:

2. First pressing or reissue
An original first pressing is usually worth several times a later reissue of the same album. To check yours, read the matrix number etched in the run-out groove near the label, then match the catalogue number, label design and country to the earliest release on Discogs. 3. Why most old records are not valuable
Age does not equal value. Chart hits from the 1960s to 80s were pressed in the millions, so a common album in average condition is worth only a few dollars however old it is. The real money is in first pressings of sought-after titles in top condition, limited runs, withdrawn or misprinted covers, and genuinely scarce records where far more collectors want a copy than own one.

Some are, most are not worth much, and that is normal. Look for first pressings of collectible artists, limited editions and unusual variants, all in clean condition. Everyday hits pressed in huge numbers stay cheap however old they are. The own-versus-want numbers above show which records collectors are actually chasing.
How do I find out what my vinyl is worth?
