The gap is the whole story of buying bullion: the same gold costs noticeably more per ounce in small coins than in big bars, and that difference is what you lose the moment you buy. How this works. Premium over spot = (dealer price − metal melt value) ÷ melt value. It's the single number that tells you the real cost of buying, and it barely changes per product even as the metal price swings. Small coins carry the highest premiums; large bars the lowest. We hold each product's typical retail premium and apply it to the live spot price, so the dollar figures move with the market while the value ranking stays honest.
About the "check price" links. Each one searches eBay for that exact product, because a mint's own homepage almost never sells the specific coin at the premium quoted here, and some mints do not sell to the public at all. Marketplace prices swing by seller and plenty of listings sit well above the typical premium in this table, so compare the per-ounce cost against the spot price above before you buy, and favour sellers with a long bullion history and a returns policy. These are plain search links with no affiliate tracking, and nothing on this page is sponsored. The table is sorted purely by premium over spot, and no dealer or seller can pay to move up it.
Common questions about comparing gold and silver prices
How do you compare gold prices properly?
Not by the headline price, because a bigger bar always costs more in total. Compare the premium over spot instead, which is what you pay above the metal's melt value, and compare the cost per troy ounce so a 100g bar and a 1oz coin line up against the same spot price. The table above does both, sorted cheapest premium first.
What does gold actually cost per ounce today?
Spot is shown live at the top of this page, but nobody buys at spot. The per ounce column in the table is what you really pay once the dealer premium is included, which is why two products with the same weight of gold can differ by hundreds of dollars.
Is it cheaper to buy gold bars or coins?
Bars, and the gap is bigger than most people expect. On this table the cheapest product is the Gold Cast Bar 100oz at about 1.8% over spot, while the Gold Maple 1/10oz runs about 12% over. That is roughly 7 times the markup for the same metal, and you lose the difference the moment you buy.
Why do gold and silver premiums differ so much?
Because premium is mostly a fixed minting and handling cost spread across the value of the metal, and silver is far cheaper per ounce. The same few dollars of cost is a small percentage of a gold coin and a large one of a silver coin, so silver premiums here reach about 22% on the Silver Libertad 1oz while gold tops out near 12%.
Does a lower premium always mean better value?
For the metal itself, yes, and that is why this page ranks by it. The trade off is flexibility: a 100oz bar is the cheapest way to hold gold but you cannot sell a tenth of it, and small coins are easier to sell piecemeal. Buy the largest unit you would be comfortable selling in one go.
