Browse the full range of used air compressors on eBay → Prices move fast. See the biggest price drops across every category this week →Every model ranked by what a cubic foot per minute of air costs at 90 PSI, using today's cheapest live listing. This is the number people get wrong. A compressor is shopped on tank gallons, and gallons only decide how long it runs before the motor cuts in. Whether it can drive the tool at all is CFM: an impact wrench asking for 4 CFM will never work properly on a 2.6 CFM pancake, however big the tank. Lower here is more air for the money. Look up what your tool needs first, because the cheapest per CFM is still the wrong compressor if it cannot reach the figure. The two stationary units and three portables on this page publish no comparable 90 PSI rating, so they are not ranked. Tap a model to see its listings.

The tank is the part that can hurt you, and it is the part nobody photographs. Water condenses inside every tank and rusts it from within, so a compressor that was never drained is thinning from the inside where you cannot see. Ask whether it was drained after each use, look for rust weeping around the drain valve at the bottom, and treat a tank that has sat outdoors as suspect regardless of how clean the outside looks. A tank failure is not a repair, it is an accident.
Ask whether it is oil-lubricated or oil-free, then judge the hours differently. An oil-free pump is quieter to buy and effectively disposable: when it wears, you replace the compressor. An oil-lubricated pump can be rebuilt and will outlast several oil-free units, so a high-hours oil-lubed machine from a known brand is often the better buy than a lightly used cheap one.
CFM at 90 PSI is the number that matters, not horsepower. Horsepower on a consumer compressor is close to marketing, and two machines claiming the same HP can deliver very different air. If the tool you want to run needs 4 CFM at 90 PSI, a compressor delivering 3.5 will run it badly no matter what the box says. The plate on the tank carries the real figure.
Listen for the pressure switch cutting in and out. A compressor that will not build to its cut-out pressure, or that trips the breaker on restart, usually has a failed unloader valve or check valve, and both are cheap. One that builds pressure slowly and runs hot has worn rings, and that is the expensive end. Both sound different, so ask for a video of it filling from empty.
Check the voltage before anything else on the big ones. Larger two-stage compressors are often 240V and sometimes three phase, and a three phase machine is close to unsellable domestically. That is exactly why they look like bargains, and why the bargain is not one.
Value. Portable pancake and hotdog compressors depreciate hard and are cheap used, which makes them the sensible secondhand buy. Cast iron two-stage machines from Quincy, Ingersoll Rand and Jenny hold their value for decades because they can be rebuilt indefinitely, so a used one is rarely cheap but rarely a mistake either.

The tank. Water condenses inside and rusts it from the inside out, so a compressor that was never drained is thinning where you cannot see. Look for rust around the drain valve and be wary of anything stored outdoors.
Oil-lubricated, generally. Those pumps can be rebuilt and last decades, so high hours are less alarming. An oil-free pump is effectively disposable, so buy those cheap and recent rather than well-used.
Match the tool, not the horsepower. A framing nailer needs very little; a die grinder or sander needs a lot and will outrun most portable compressors. The figure to compare is CFM at 90 PSI, which is on the plate, because horsepower claims on consumer machines are close to meaningless.
Usually because they are three phase, which most homes and small workshops cannot run. Check the voltage and phase before anything else on a big two-stage machine.
