The meal-kit "first box" deal hides the real price: $3.70 to $28.17 a serving delivered

We costed 32 meal-kit and prepared-meal services at their ongoing (post-promo) price plus delivery, spread over a typical 2-person, 3-meal box. The cheapest true cost is Nutrisystem at $3.70 a serving; the priciest is Sakara Life at $28.17. The headline "60% off first box" is gone by box two, and on a small box the flat delivery fee alone adds over a dollar a serving.

How we rank. We use the ongoing per-serving price (not the first-box promo), then add the delivery fee spread across the servings in your chosen box. That gives the real delivered cost per serving a $4.99 kit with $10 shipping on a small 6-serving box actually lands near $6.66. Bigger boxes dilute the shipping and free-shipping services (like Factor) climb the ranking. Prices are indicative USD, checked periodically, confirm on the service's site.

How to actually save on meal kits

The advertised price is the trap. Almost every service leads with a huge "first box" or "60% off" promo, then the price jumps to the ongoing rate from box two, and a flat delivery fee of around $10 is added on top. The table above ignores the promo and shows the real ongoing delivered cost per serving for the box size you actually choose, which is the only number worth comparing between services.

Box size changes the winner. Because the delivery fee is a flat charge spread across the servings in your box, a small box makes shipping sting: a $4.99 kit with $10 shipping on a six-serving box really costs about $6.66 a serving, while the same kit on a bigger box drops well under $6. If you are cooking for one or two, the cheapest headline kit is often not the cheapest once shipping is spread, so use the selector and compare like for like.

Never pay full price, and never get locked in. These are flexible subscriptions, not contracts: you can pause, skip weeks, or cancel any time, and most let you skip indefinitely. The smart play is to ride the heavy first-box discount, then pause before the full-price boxes start, and jump to whichever service is running the best new-customer offer next time. Ready-made "prepared" services such as Factor often include free shipping, which can make them better value than a cheaper-looking kit once delivery is added.

When groceries still win. Meal kits are not cheaper than cooking the same meals from a supermarket shop; they sit between groceries and takeaway. What you are really paying for is the planning, the exact portions and near-zero food waste. If your goal is purely to spend less on food, a planned grocery shop beats every service here. If it is to save time and decision fatigue on weeknights, the value ranking above tells you which service does it for the least.

Common questions

How much do meal kits really cost per week?

For two people × three recipes (six servings), most kits are $55-80/week once shipping is added. The advertised per-serving price is usually before the ~$10 delivery fee.

Are meal kits cheaper than groceries?

No, cooking the same meals from supermarket ingredients is cheaper per serving. Meal kits sit between groceries and takeaway: dearer than a home shop, cheaper than nightly delivery, and they save planning and waste.

What's the cheapest meal kit?

EveryPlate and Dinnerly on the ongoing rate. But add shipping and a realistic box size, a small box makes the flat delivery fee sting. Use the selector for the true delivered cost.

Do meal kits charge for shipping?

Most charge ~$10 a box, sometimes waived above a threshold. Ready-made services like Factor often include free shipping, which can make them better value than the sticker price suggests.
