How to buy a used Samsung Galaxy

Check for the two Samsung-specific gotchas first. On the AMOLED screen, display a solid grey or white image and look for burn-in (faint ghost outlines of the status bar or keyboard), which is permanent. Then confirm the phone is not locked to the previous owner's Samsung/Google account: ask that it has been factory reset and signed out, or the FRP (Factory Reset Protection) lock will stop you setting it up. Get the IMEI (dial *#06#) and run a free blacklist check so you know it is not reported lost or on an unpaid contract.

Which model is the value sweet spot. Galaxy S flagships depreciate fast, which is exactly why they are such good used buys. The S21, S22 and S23 hit the sweet spot: still fast, still receiving Samsung's four-plus years of updates, and far below new. Avoid older models that are near the end of their update window. Storage is not expandable on recent models, so buy 128GB or more, and test the fingerprint sensor, cameras and charging port.

Watch for the green-line issue. A small number of older Galaxy AMOLED panels develop a vertical green or pink line over time. It is not something you can fix cheaply, so inspect the screen edge-to-edge in the photos and in person before buying.

Used vs new. A clean used Galaxy flagship typically runs 45-60% below its launch price for nearly the same experience, and Samsung's own certified re-newed units add a short warranty for a small premium if you want the extra safety.

For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one. A few models read "above" instead: they now cost more used than they did new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
