How to buy a used Wacom tablet

The pen is the fragile, expensive part. Wacom tablets are robust, but the pen is where problems hide and a replacement pen can cost a large share of a used tablet's price, so confirm the pen is included and fully working: it should track smoothly across the whole surface, register pressure sensitivity, and its buttons should work. A tablet sold without its pen is only worth buying if you already have a compatible one.

Nibs wear but are cheap. The pen nib (tip) wears down with use and can scratch the surface once too short, but replacement nibs are inexpensive and often come in a multipack, so a worn nib is a minor point. Check the tablet surface itself for deep scratches or gouges, which do affect drawing feel and cannot be undone.

Screen or non-screen, and driver support. Decide between a plain graphics tablet (cheaper, you look at your monitor) and a pen display (you draw directly on a screen, pricier). On pen displays, check for dead pixels and that the screen is bright and even. Confirm the model still has current driver support for your operating system, as very old tablets can be dropped, and that the right cables are included.

Value. A working tablet with a healthy pen is a low-risk used buy, since the hardware barely dates; just make sure that pen is genuinely included and functioning.

These are second hand prices, listed by sellers as used or pre-owned, taken from live eBay US listings in US dollars. In collectible categories a sealed or unworn item is sometimes the cheapest genuine listing, and it is included. The same number works both ways: it is what a buyer pays today and the resale value a seller can realistically ask. Every model also carries a price history, the daily record kept since tracking began, which is the part to read before you buy or resell. On a day when a model has no listing that passes these filters, its row keeps the last price we recorded rather than inventing one, and drops off this table if that goes on for more than a few days.

Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.
