How to buy a used tool safely. The number that matters is the total including shipping, which we add up for you. Then check the seller's feedback (shown on every listing) and read the title for tool only versus kit, since a cheap price often means no battery or charger. Confirm the tool runs and the chuck grips, and treat an old or missing battery as a discount. Favour listings with real photos of the actual tool, and remember eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it arrives faulty or not as described.

How to buy a used cordless drill

The battery platform is the real purchase. When you buy into a cordless drill you are really buying into a battery system, because batteries and chargers from one brand rarely fit another. If you already own tools from a brand, a bare "tool only" drill that shares your batteries is far better value. If you are starting fresh, buy a kit with batteries and charger included.

Check the battery health and the chuck. Rechargeable packs fade with age, so ask how long a charge lasts and whether the batteries still hold their capacity; replacement packs are the most expensive part, so a drill sold with tired batteries is worth much less. Spin the chuck to check it grips evenly, test forward and reverse, and listen for a healthy motor without grinding.

Brushless is worth paying for. Brushless motors run cooler, last longer and squeeze more work from a charge than older brushed ones, so a brushless model is the pick if the price is close. Confirm the drill is a drill-driver (or combi with hammer action if you drill masonry) rather than an impact driver, which does a different job.

Value. Sticking to a single battery platform and buying bare tools used is the cheapest way to build a cordless kit.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings, one of the largest sources of used and open-box power tools. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time.

Bare tool or full kit?

A bare tool has no battery or charger and is far cheaper if you already own batteries on that platform. A kit includes both. We list both, so check the title and sort by total price.

What should I check first?

That the tool runs and the chuck grips, whether a battery is included and how old it is, seller feedback and sales count, returns policy, and total price with shipping. Real photos of the actual tool matter.

How much cheaper is used?

Bare used tools often run 40-60% below a new kit, since the battery and charger cost the most. Open-box and refurbished sit in between. We show the cheapest next to the typical price so you can judge.

What do the model numbers mean?

Brands label tools by model number: DeWalt DCD777 and DCD791 are 20V drills, DCF887 is a 20V impact driver; Milwaukee 2804 is an M18 Fuel drill and 2853 an M18 Fuel impact driver. Search by the exact number to compare like-for-like prices.
