E-ink screens can crack internally even when the glass looks fine, showing as lines, blots or a frozen section, so ask for a photo of the screen switched on and displaying a page. Just as important, the Kindle must be deregistered from the previous owner's Amazon account, or you cannot add your own; ask them to remove it from their devices list.
Which model, and mind the ads. Older Kindles still read perfectly, so a couple of generations back is fine unless you want a specific feature. Decide whether you want a front light (Paperwhite and up) and waterproofing, which only the higher models have. Many Kindles were sold as cheaper "with special offers" versions that show ads on the lock screen; these can usually be removed for a small fee, worth knowing before you buy.
Battery and buttons. E-readers sip power and the battery lasts for years, but a very old unit may need charging often, so ask. Confirm the charging port works and the touchscreen responds across the whole screen. A worn case or scuffs are cosmetic and cheap to cover.
Value. Kindles hold up for years, so a supported Paperwhite a generation or two old is excellent value against new.

Yes, mostly. Favour high-feedback sellers, check that the e-ink display works with no burn-in, verify the device powers on and charges, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee.
Usually 35-55% below new. Current models hold value well; older generations drop sharply once new ones launch.
Total price with shipping, seller feedback and sales count, returns policy, whether the device is deregistered, screen condition, battery life, and whether the charger is included. Real photos matter.
Yes. All recent Kindles use standard USB-C charging and come with a cable. Older Paperwhite and basic models use micro-USB. Any compatible cable works fine. Original chargers are nice but not required unless the listing explicitly says the cable is included.
Each Kindle as a percentage of its launch price. Amazon prices new Kindles low and discounts them often, so a used one has to fall a long way before it beats waiting for a sale. Anything not well under launch price is worth checking against the current new price before you buy. Tap a model to see its listings.
A daily snapshot of the lowest genuine eBay price for every model we track, and how good that price is right now versus its usual level, updated automatically. Prices last refreshed 12 October 2026. These are second hand prices, listed by sellers as used or pre-owned, taken from live eBay US listings in US dollars. In collectible categories a sealed or unworn item is sometimes the cheapest genuine listing, and it is included. The same number works both ways: it is what a buyer pays today and the resale value a seller can realistically ask. Every model also carries a price history, the daily record kept since tracking began, which is the part to read before you buy or resell. On a day when a model has no listing that passes these filters, its row keeps the last price we recorded rather than inventing one, and drops off this table if that goes on for more than a few days.
Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.
"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model costs new. For anything still on sale that is its current new price, so the figure is close to a discount you could really get. For anything no longer sold it is the last new price we have on record: on a boxed product like a LEGO set or a console that is the RRP, and on a part like a graphics card it is nearer what new stock was going for at the end than what it cost at launch. So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker. A few rows read "above" instead: they cost more used than new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
