Check it has been unadopted before anything else. A Ubiquiti device still tied to the previous owner's controller will not adopt to yours, and on some models the seller has to release it from their account before a factory reset is enough. Ask outright, and treat a seller who does not understand the question as a risk. Then confirm the power supply is included, since injectors and proprietary bricks are the usual missing piece, check whether the maker still issues firmware updates for that model, because network hardware is the last place you want unpatched software, and ask about fan noise if it is going anywhere you sit. Favour sellers who show the label, because the model and revision printed on it tell you what you are actually getting.

Best value by cost per port

Every switch ranked by price per port, using today's cheapest live listing. It is the fairest way to compare switches, because the headline price mostly reflects how many ports you get: an eight-port unit can look cheap and still cost three times as much per port as a 24-port one. Lower is more network for your money. Port counts are the ones the maker puts in the model name, and SFP uplinks are not counted. Two things this number does not capture, so check both before you buy: whether the ports carry PoE, since powered ports are worth considerably more than plain ones, and how loud the fans are. Routers and access points are left out because nobody buys them by the port. Tap a model to see its listings.

How to buy used network gear

Check that a Ubiquiti device has been factory reset before you buy it. This is the one that catches people out. A device still adopted to the previous owner's controller will not adopt to yours, and while a reset is usually just a paperclip in a hole, some models need the seller to release it from their account first. Ask outright whether it has been reset and unadopted. A seller who understands the question is a seller who ran the kit properly.

Most access points need power over Ethernet, and the injector is what goes missing. Ubiquiti stopped including injectors with some models, and secondhand listings are inconsistent about it. If you do not already run a PoE switch, add the cost of an injector to every access point price you compare. It is the single most common gap between two listings that look identical.

Enterprise switches are loud, and the listing never says so. Anything rack mounted with more than a couple of PoE ports has fans designed for a comms room, not a spare bedroom. If it is going anywhere near where you sleep or work, look for a fanless model. This is the most common regret with cheap secondhand rack gear.

Work out the idle draw before the bargain looks like one. A 48-port PoE switch can pull a meaningful load doing nothing, and running one continuously costs real money over a year. For a home network, a small fanless switch usually beats a free enterprise one once the meter is counted.

Watch the firmware and support horizon. Older kit still works but stops receiving updates, and network hardware is exactly where you do not want unpatched firmware. Check what the maker still supports rather than what the seller says it runs.

Value. Prices here move in waves, because businesses dump whole fleets when they refresh, and a dozen identical units hitting the market at once drops the price for weeks. The current generation holds value; the one before it falls off sharply, which is where the buying is.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price.

What is the catch with used Ubiquiti gear?

Adoption. A device still tied to the previous owner's controller will not adopt to yours until it is factory reset, and some models need the seller to release it from their account first. Ask whether it has been reset and unadopted before you bid.

Do I need anything else to run an access point?

Power over Ethernet, from either a PoE switch or an injector, and the injector is the thing most often missing from a used listing. If you do not already run PoE, add the price of an injector to every access point on this page before comparing them.

Is a secondhand rack switch a good idea at home?

Only if you can put it somewhere you cannot hear it. Rack mounted PoE switches are built for a comms room and the fans are loud. A small fanless switch is usually the better buy for a house, even at a worse price per port.

Why do prices jump around so much?

Businesses replace networking gear in whole fleets, so a dozen identical units can hit the market at once and hold the price down for weeks. It is worth checking back rather than buying the first week you look.
