Ask what the monitor reads and whether it wakes up. On a Concept2 the PM5 is most of the resale value, and a dead one is a two hundred dollar problem on a machine that is otherwise indestructible. Ask the seller to photograph it switched on showing lifetime metres, which tells you the monitor works and roughly how hard the machine has been used at the same time. Then check the chain or the strap for rust and stiffness, ask whether it separates into two pieces if you need it up stairs, and on anything with a screen confirm what still works without a subscription.

How to buy a used rowing machine

A Concept2 is not really a used-goods purchase. This is the fact that catches people out. A new RowErg is around $990 before shipping, and the used ones on this page mostly sit within a couple of hundred dollars of that, sometimes closer. The machines are aluminium and steel with a chain and a fan, nothing wears out, and the result is a secondhand market that barely discounts. That is not a reason to avoid one, it is a reason to be honest about the saving before you drive two hours for it.

The connected rowers are the opposite trade. A Hydrow, an Echelon or an iFit NordicTrack costs a lot new and lands here at a fraction of it, because the screen is only worth what the subscription is worth and the second owner has to start that bill again. Before you buy one, find out exactly what the machine does with no membership: some drop to a bare stopwatch, some keep resistance control and a basic readout. That single answer is the difference between a bargain and a very large clothes rack.

Ask for the lifetime metres. Any decent monitor stores them, and it is the odometer for these machines. Under a million metres is barely run in. Several million on a Concept2 is still fine mechanically but should be reflected in the price, and a seller who will not photograph the number usually has a reason.

Water and air rowers have different failure modes. An air rower is a fan and a chain, so the worst realistic outcome is a rusty chain and a worn sprocket, both cheap. A water rower is a sealed tank, so ask whether it has ever leaked and whether the water has been treated, because algae in the tank means draining and refilling rather than a repair. Magnetic home models are the quietest and the least repairable: the resistance unit is usually a sealed assembly.

Measure the doorway before you agree a price. Most of these are over two metres long. A Concept2 splits into two parts in about ten seconds and fits in a hatchback, which is a large part of why the used market for them works. A WaterRower stands upright but has to be drained first, and the connected rowers are heavy one-piece frames that need two people and a van.

Collection-only is where the money is. Freight on something this long and heavy is brutal, so the sharpest prices are always local pickup and the shipped ones carry the cost. The totals here include shipping wherever the seller states it, so a cheap row that stays cheap after postage is a genuinely cheap row.

Common questions

Where do these prices come from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price, so nothing here is an estimate.

Why is a used Concept2 barely cheaper than a new one?

Because almost nothing on it wears out. It is aluminium, steel, a chain and a fan, so a fifteen year old one rows like a new one and the secondhand market prices it that way. Expect a couple of hundred dollars off a new RowErg rather than half price.

What is the single most useful thing to ask a seller?

For a photo of the monitor switched on showing lifetime metres. It proves the monitor works, which is the expensive part, and tells you how hard the machine has been used, both from one picture.

Do the screen-based rowers still work without a subscription?

It depends on the model and you have to ask. Some drop back to a plain stopwatch with no resistance control, which is why they lose so much value. Others keep a basic readout. Find out before you buy, because it is most of what you are paying for.

Air, water or magnetic?

Air is loud, indestructible and what rowing clubs use. Water is quieter with a pleasant sound and needs the tank kept clean. Magnetic is the quietest and the cheapest, and the least worth repairing when the resistance unit goes.

Will it fit in my car?

A Concept2 separates into two pieces in seconds and fits in most hatchbacks. A WaterRower has to be drained first. Connected rowers are one-piece and heavy, so plan for two people and a van, and read the listing for pickup terms before you commit.
