How to buy a used treadmill

The deck and the belt are the whole game. Everything else on a treadmill is either cheap or lasts forever. The running deck is a board with a low-friction surface, the belt slides across it, and once that surface wears through, the motor works harder, the belt hesitates under each footfall and you are into a repair that often costs more than the machine is worth used. Look at the belt under a light: a shiny strip down the middle where the feet land means the deck below it is worn. Many decks can be flipped once, which buys years, so ask whether it already has been.

Continuous horsepower, not peak. Sellers quote peak because it is the bigger number. What matters is continuous duty, usually written CHP. Under 2.5 CHP is a walking machine whatever the box said. 3.0 CHP and up will take running by an adult without the motor heating up and shortening its own life. A 2.0 CHP motor pushed by a heavy runner is the second most common reason a cheap treadmill dies young.

Folding costs you something. A folding deck needs a hinge and a lift mechanism, and both are places a frame can flex under a runner. If the machine is going to live in one place, a non-folding frame is stiffer, quieter and usually cheaper used because it is harder to move. If it has to fold away, check the hydraulic lift actually holds it up rather than dropping the deck.

Assume collection only, and price that in. A treadmill is 250 to 350 pounds in an awkward shape, and almost nobody ships one. That is why the used prices look low next to retail: you are buying the machine and taking on the problem of moving it. Two people, a stair-climbing trolley and a measured doorway. Ask whether it separates or folds flat enough for the route in.

Check what dies without a subscription. The screen-first machines, Peloton Tread, NordicTrack with iFit, Echelon, are built around a monthly plan. Most still run in a basic manual mode without it, but the guided classes, the automatic incline changes and sometimes the metrics history do not. Buy one of these on the assumption that you will either pay the subscription or use it as a plain treadmill, and check which before you hand over money.

Commercial frames are the bargain nobody looks for. A gym-grade Life Fitness, Precor, Matrix or Landice is built for forty hours a week and sold on in bulk when a gym refits. They are heavier, less pretty and have no touchscreen, and they routinely go for less than a mid-range home machine of the same age because they are hard to move and look industrial in a spare room. If you have the space and the access, this is where the value is.
