Browse the full range of AV receivers on eBay →Channels are the one thing on a receiver you cannot add later. A streamer you can plug in, a subwoofer you can buy next year, but a 5-channel receiver will never drive height speakers without a separate power amplifier sitting next to it. So every receiver here is ranked by what one amplified channel costs at today's used price. Lower is more speakers driven for your money. Tap a receiver to see its listings.

What this ranking cannot tell you is how loud those channels go. Nine channels at 100 watts and seven at 125 are different receivers in a big room, and a cheap nine will run out of current before an expensive seven does. Read the top of the table as the cheapest way to fill a speaker layout, then check the power rating for the room you are actually filling. Worth knowing before you read the order: eleven of these nineteen receivers amplify seven channels, so among those eleven this table is simply the cheapest one, and the ranking only really separates the five and nine and fifteen channel machines from them.
Check that it powers on and all HDMI ports work. The most important test: confirm the receiver powers up, the display lights, and video and audio pass through on at least two different HDMI input ports. Many sellers will demo this on video. Verify the remote is included and has working batteries. A missing or broken remote is fixable but adds to the cost; third-party remotes are 20 to 60 dollars.
Watch for HDMI board faults on older Denon and Marantz units. Some Denon and Marantz receivers from 2016 to 2019 developed HDMI board failures, causing one or more ports to drop video or audio. Ask the seller specifically whether all HDMI ports have been tested and working, and request confirmation that HDMI switching works flawlessly across inputs. A faulty HDMI board repair can cost 200 to 400 dollars.
Know your needs: channels, HDMI 2.1, and room correction. Check the number of channels: 5.1 is enough for most living rooms, 7.2 is better for larger spaces, and 9.2 adds height speakers for Atmos (immersive but not essential). If you plan to game on PS5 or Xbox Series X, look for HDMI 2.1 support for 4K at 120Hz. Check whether the receiver has room correction (Denon Audyssey, Yamaha YPAO, Onkyo Acro Quest) if your room is not acoustically ideal; these are useful features but not required.
Factor in firmware and availability of spares. Confirm whether the model has active firmware updates available from the manufacturer; older units may no longer receive patches. Check that the manual and remote are available online or included. Parts like capacitors can fail in aged units, but a functioning receiver with a few minor quirks often beats a cheap new model.
Building around a turntable? Before you spend on the amplifier, it is worth knowing which of your records are worth more than the receiver: see what vinyl actually sells for.

Yes. Favor high-feedback sellers, check that it powers on and passes video and audio through HDMI ports, look for detailed photos of the actual unit and connections, confirm the remote is included, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee if anything arrives faulty or not working.
Cables (HDMI, analog audio/video), a universal remote if yours is damaged or lost (20 to 60 dollars), possible speaker upgrades or additional speakers for surround channels, and possibly a subwoofer if the receiver is being used for music or gaming. Budget 50 to 200 dollars for basic cables and a remote.
Not necessarily. A 5.1 receiver and five simple speakers give a great movie and gaming experience in most living rooms. Atmos and 7.2 are nice-to-have for immersion, but add cost and complexity. Start with 5.1 and upgrade if you want more after a year or two of use.
Check the seller's feedback score (higher is better), whether the receiver powers on and all HDMI ports pass video and audio through, the condition of the remote and cables, and confirm no HDMI board faults (a known issue on some Denon and Marantz units from 2016-2019). Ask about any missing components, the age of the unit, and whether a firmware update is available.
HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120Hz and 8K resolution, which matter for gaming on PS5, Xbox Series X, and newer graphics cards. Most living rooms do not need 8K yet, but 4K120 is useful for console gaming. Older receivers (pre-2019) usually have HDMI 2.0 or earlier, which max out at 4K60Hz. Check the spec sheet if high-refresh gaming is your use case.
