How to buy a used impact wrench

Work out whether the price is for a bare tool or a kit, because it is usually a bare tool. Almost every cordless impact on eBay is sold as the tool only, and the batteries and charger cost as much again. Manufacturer part numbers tell you outright: a DeWalt code ending in B, like DCF899HB, is bare, and Makita codes ending in Z are the same. If you do not already own batteries on that platform, add their cost before comparing anything.

The battery platform matters more than the tool. Buying into Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V MAX or Makita LXT is a decision you will live with across every future tool, and it is the reason a slightly worse impact on a platform you already own beats a better one that strands you. This is the one purchase where the sensible move is often to ignore the reviews and match your existing batteries.

Torque figures are marketing until you check which one is quoted. Fastening torque and nut-busting torque are different numbers and the larger one is always the one on the box. Compare tools on the same figure or not at all, and treat anything without a stated test standard as a guess.

On an air tool, the compressor decides everything. A pneumatic impact rated at 5 CFM will run badly on a compressor delivering 3, no matter how good the tool is, and most portable compressors deliver less than people assume. Air impacts are cheap secondhand precisely because so many buyers discover this afterwards.

Check the anvil and the detent pin. Look for chewing or mushrooming where the socket sits, and make sure the retaining pin or ring still holds a socket firmly. A worn anvil throws sockets and is not economically repairable on a consumer tool, and it is the one wear point a photograph will show you if you ask for it.

Value. Bare tools hold their money well because the platform keeps them in demand long after the model is superseded, so a discontinued flagship is often the best buy here. Kits depreciate faster, because the batteries inside them age whether or not anyone uses them.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price.

Are these prices for the tool only or a full kit?

Almost always the bare tool, which is how most of these sell. The part numbers say so directly: a DeWalt code ending in B and a Makita code ending in Z are tool-only. Budget for batteries and a charger separately unless you already own them.

Which battery platform should I buy into?

Whichever you already own, in most cases. The platform outlives any individual tool, and a slightly lesser impact that shares your existing batteries beats a better one that needs a whole new set of chargers and packs.

Is an air impact wrench cheaper overall?

The tool is much cheaper, the compressor is not. A pneumatic impact needs real CFM at 90 PSI and most portable compressors cannot supply it, which is exactly why air impacts look like bargains secondhand.

What wears out on these?

The anvil, where the socket mounts, and the detent pin or ring that holds the socket on. Ask for a photo of the anvil: chewing or mushrooming means it will throw sockets, and it is not worth repairing on a consumer tool.
