How to buy a used robot vacuum

Check the battery and ask how old it is. Batteries are a wear item on robot vacuums and degrade over time. Ask the seller how long the previous owner used it and whether the battery still holds a full charge. Replacement batteries are cheap on most models, so factor in 40-80 dollars if you need one. Some sellers will mention the battery was recently replaced or the unit is less than a year old.

Confirm the dock and power-on, and check the brushes. Verify it comes with the charging dock and that both power on and dock correctly. Check that the main brush and filter are present and not caked with dust or hair (these are cheap to replace). Confirm the unit has been factory-reset and unpaired from the previous owner's app and account, otherwise you will not be able to set it up with your own.

Self-emptying models carry the base value. Models like the iRobot j7+ and Roborock S8 have a self-emptying base that stores weeks of dust and is worth significant money on its own. If the listing includes the base, the total value is much higher. Confirm the base powers on and empties correctly.

Verify the app still supports the model. Mapping and no-go zones require the mobile app, so confirm the model is still app-supported by the manufacturer. Older models may have been dropped, so check before buying if the app is important to you. Most current-generation models have at least 3-5 years of app support.

These are second hand prices, listed by sellers as used or pre-owned, taken from live eBay US listings in US dollars. In collectible categories a sealed or unworn item is sometimes the cheapest genuine listing, and it is included. The same number works both ways: it is what a buyer pays today and the resale value a seller can realistically ask. Every model also carries a price history, the daily record kept since tracking began, which is the part to read before you buy or resell. On a day when a model has no listing that passes these filters, its row keeps the last price we recorded rather than inventing one, and drops off this table if that goes on for more than a few days.

Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.
