How to buy a used studio monitor

Check if you are buying a single or a pair. Studio monitors are sold both ways on eBay. A stereo pair is what you need for mixing work, so read the listing carefully. A suspiciously low price often means it is a single speaker, not a pair. Confirm in the title or ask the seller before bidding.

Match the woofer size to your room. A 5-inch woofer like the KRK Rokit 5, Yamaha HS5 or JBL 305P works well for small rooms, desks and home studios. A 7 to 8-inch woofer like the Rokit 7, HS8 or PreSonus Eris E8 gives deeper bass and suits larger spaces. Smaller drivers give tighter bass and work in confined spaces; larger drivers need more room but give more low-end response.

Verify power and cables. Studio monitors are active speakers with built-in amplifiers, so each speaker needs mains power from a wall outlet. Connect balanced XLR or TRS cables from your audio interface to each monitor, one cable per speaker. Test that both speakers power on cleanly with no hum, hiss or crackling. Check the woofer and tweeter both produce sound.

Inspect the foam surrounds and condition. Foam surrounds on older monitors deteriorate and can ruin the speaker. Look for photos showing the foam in good condition and ask the seller if there is any rot or flaking. Monitors are heavy so prefer local pickup to save on shipping, or confirm the seller packs securely. Used monitors often come without the original packaging so confirm condition reports before committing.

In collectible categories a sealed or unworn item is sometimes the cheapest genuine listing, and it is included. The same number works both ways: it is what a buyer pays today and the resale value a seller can realistically ask. Every model also carries a price history, the daily record kept since tracking began, which is the part to read before you buy or resell. On a day when a model has no listing that passes these filters, its row keeps the last price we recorded rather than inventing one, and drops off this table if that goes on for more than a few days.

Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.
