For many people, yes. At 40-60% below new, a sound used Aeron or Steelcase Leap is one of the best value buys in seating. They are built for 10-15 years of daily use, so a well-kept used one has plenty left.
Aeron knockoffs are common. Check for the Herman Miller logo on the back of the seat and under the arm pads, ask for the model year, and be wary of "Aeron style" or unbranded listings priced far below the rest. A genuine Aeron rarely sells under about $250.
Whether it is local pickup only (shipping a chair is expensive), that the tilt and height mechanisms work and the cylinder holds, the mesh or foam is not sagging, and which size it is (Aerons come in A, B and C). Real photos and high seller feedback matter.
Both are excellent. The Aeron has a breathable mesh seat and back and a firmer feel, ideal in warm rooms. The Leap has a padded seat and a flexible back that follows your spine, which many find more comfortable for long sits. On the used market the Leap is often a little cheaper for similar quality, so compare the live prices here for both.
Each chair as a percentage of its list price new. Office chairs depreciate harder than almost anything else on this site, partly because they are awkward to ship and partly because a used one is a used one. That is bad news for sellers and the whole argument for buying second hand: the chairs at the top of this table are the ones where somebody else has already taken the hit. "Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model cost new. For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one. A few models read "above" instead: they now cost more used than they did new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
