Security cameras, subscription and all.

The camera is the cheap part. Most big brands record nothing until you pay 5 to 10 dollars a month for cloud storage, and over a few years that costs more than the camera. So this ranks cameras by their real total cost, and flags every one that records locally with no subscription at all.

Pricing reviewed 20 August 2026 . Indicative US prices in USD for a single camera; cloud plans are the entry per-camera rate. Multi-camera plans can lower the per-camera fee.

usefulHQ Study · 2026

On 16 of the 19 cameras that need a cloud plan, the subscription costs more over three years than the camera did

We added three years of cloud fees to the purchase price across 42 cameras. 19 of them need a paid plan to keep recordings at all, and on 16 of those the plan outruns the hardware: the Blink Mini 2 is $30 to buy and $108 to keep running, 3.6 times the camera. The average plan bill across the subscription models is $229. The other 23 record to a card or a local drive with no fee ever, which is the whole choice on this page and is not visible in the shelf price.

Manufacturer list prices and the cheapest paid plan that keeps recorded video for a single camera, in USD, checked periodically. Three years is used because it is roughly how long people keep a camera; multi-camera plans and annual prepay are cheaper per camera and are not counted here. Cameras that record locally are shown as no fee even where an optional plan exists. Cite this: "usefulHQ Security Cameras Study 2026", usefulhq.com/security-cameras/.

How to read this. Total over term is the camera price plus its cloud subscription for the number of years you chose. A camera that records only to the cloud (Ring, Arlo, SimpliSafe) keeps charging that monthly fee for as long as you own it. The No-sub option column flags cameras that record to a memory card or a local hub for free, so their total is basically just the purchase price. Set the term to one year and the cheap cloud cameras look fine; set it to five and the no-subscription cameras win comfortably. Cloud fees shown are the entry single-camera rate; if you run several cameras, brands like Ring and Arlo bundle them under one plan, which lowers the per-camera cost. Prices are indicative, always confirm before buying.

Common questions

Do security cameras need a subscription?

Many do. Ring, Arlo and SimpliSafe record almost nothing without a paid plan ($5-$10+ a month per camera). Others, including Eufy, Reolink, Tapo, Lorex and Wyze with a memory card, record locally with no fee. Over three years the subscription often beats the camera price, so this ranks by total cost.

What is the cheapest camera to run?

Cameras with local storage and no required subscription, like Tapo, Wyze with a microSD, Reolink and Eufy. A $40 Tapo can cost $40 total for years, while a cheaper cloud-only camera passes $200 over three years.

Is local storage as good as cloud?

For most people, yes, and it works even if your internet drops. The catch is footage can be lost if the camera is stolen, so cloud backup has value on entry and outdoor cameras. Many no-subscription cameras offer optional cloud too.

Which brands have no monthly fee?

Eufy, Reolink, TP-Link Tapo, Lorex and Ubiquiti are built around local storage. Wyze and Blink can run fee-free with a memory card or local hub. Use the No subscription filter to see only those.
