How to buy a used synthesizer

Test every key, knob and jack. Synths have a lot of moving controls, so ask the seller to confirm all keys sound and respond to velocity, every knob and slider works without crackle (dirty pots are common but usually cleanable), and the pitch and mod wheels return properly. Check the audio and MIDI or USB outputs actually pass signal, as a dead output points to a board fault.

Analog versus digital, and the age trap. Analog synths have a prized sound but their components drift and age, and repairs need a specialist, so factory calibration and condition matter. Digital synths are more stable but a failed screen or encoder can be hard to source on discontinued models. Decide which you want, and for vintage gear research the known faults of that specific model before buying.

Power supplies and shipping. Many synths use a specific power adaptor or an internal supply; confirm the correct one is included, as third-party bricks can damage the unit. Keyboards are heavy and fragile, so favour good packaging or local pickup, and check the case, end cheeks and screen for damage that hints at rough handling.

Value. Sought-after models hold or gain value, so a working classic in good order is both an instrument and a fair store of money.

These are second hand prices, listed by sellers as used or pre-owned, taken from live eBay US listings in US dollars. In collectible categories a sealed or unworn item is sometimes the cheapest genuine listing, and it is included. The same number works both ways: it is what a buyer pays today and the resale value a seller can realistically ask. Every model also carries a price history, the daily record kept since tracking began, which is the part to read before you buy or resell. On a day when a model has no listing that passes these filters, its row keeps the last price we recorded rather than inventing one, and drops off this table if that goes on for more than a few days.

Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.
