The graphics card is soldered in and decides how well games run, so it is the single spec that matters most and the one to shop by. A two-year-old machine with a former high-end GPU will out-game a brand-new budget laptop, so ignore the model year and match the exact card (and its wattage, since the same card is tuned differently between thin and chunky laptops) to the games and resolution you play at.
Heat is the enemy, so check the cooling. Gaming laptops run hot and the fans and thermal paste wear with heavy use, which shows up as loud fans, throttling and high temperatures. Ask whether it has been repasted, listen for grinding fans in a video, and be wary of a machine that was clearly hammered. Dust-clogged vents and a tired battery are the usual signs of a hard life.
Battery, screen and a clean start. Laptop batteries fade, and gaming laptops chew through them, so ask how long a charge lasts now. Check the screen for dead pixels and cracks and confirm the refresh rate you expect (144Hz and up is worth having). Make sure it has been reset and is not locked to a previous owner's account or a BIOS password, and that the correct high-wattage charger is included.
Value. Gaming laptops depreciate fast, so a lightly-used one or two generation old machine with a strong GPU is often far better value than a new mid-range model.

The GPU. It is soldered in and sets the gaming performance, so buy by the exact graphics card (and its wattage) rather than the brand or year. An older high-end card beats a newer low-end one.
Usually, because gaming laptops depreciate quickly. The risks are heat-related wear and a tired battery, so buy on GPU and condition rather than age.
The exact GPU, then battery health, fan noise, screen condition, that the charger is included, and that it has been reset and is not account or BIOS locked. Total price with shipping is what matters.
They all make good machines; the differences are cooling, build and keyboard. Razer Blade is the premium thin-and-light, ASUS ROG and Lenovo Legion are strong all-rounders with good cooling, Alienware is powerful but bulky, and MSI, Acer Predator and HP Omen offer more performance per dollar. Match the GPU and screen you want first, then pick the brand and condition that fit your budget.
