Work out the weight of your camera with the heaviest lens you actually use, plus anything that lives on top of it, and buy a gimbal rated comfortably above that. Running near the limit is where the problems start: the motors work harder, battery life collapses, and the stabilisation gets soft exactly when you need it. Buying one size up is cheaper than buying twice.
Balance is a skill, and a badly balanced gimbal looks broken. Most complaints about used gimbals are balance problems rather than faults. The motors should hold position with the power off in every axis before you ever switch it on. If a seller says it "does not hold", that may be a five minute adjustment or a dead motor, and the only way to tell is to see it running.
Listen to the motors, do not just look at them. Worn bearings show up as a faint grinding or a wobble under load, and they are the one failure on these that is not worth repairing. Ask for a video with the gimbal balanced and moving through pan and tilt, and treat a seller who will only send stills as an untested machine.
The plates are the part that goes missing. Quick-release plates are model-specific, Manfrotto and Arca patterns are not interchangeable across every model, and a pair costs real money. The same goes for the extended grip that doubles as a tripod, which is what makes the thing usable on a table. A listing with the case, plates and grip is worth meaningfully more than a bare head.
Batteries date these faster than the motors do. The older Ronin-S and Crane models take proprietary cells that are getting scarce, while the newer RS bodies charge over USB-C. If you are buying at the older end, check that a replacement battery is still available before you bid, since an unpowered gimbal is a paperweight.
The previous generation is the value buy. An RS 2 or an RSC 2 does what an RS 4 does for a fraction of the price, and the differences are convenience rather than capability: faster balancing, a brighter screen, a slightly better app. If you are stabilising a mirrorless body rather than building a rig, the older models are where the money on this page goes furthest.
