How to buy a used iPad (and which one)

Confirm it is signed out of iCloud. As with any Apple device, the iPad must have Find My / Activation Lock turned off and be signed out of the previous owner's Apple ID, or it is unusable. If a cellular iPad, also run the IMEI through a blacklist checker. Ask for a photo of the Settings screen showing it is reset and ready.

Match the model to what you will actually do. For browsing, video and notes, a used base iPad or iPad Air is plenty and the best value. Only pay up for a Pro if you need the ProMotion display or run demanding creative apps. Crucially, Apple Pencil support differs by generation, so if you want to draw or write, check which Pencil the specific model takes before buying. Storage is fixed, so 128GB or more saves you juggling files.

Check the battery and screen. iPads do not surface battery health as clearly as iPhones, so ask how heavily it was used and test that it holds charge. Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels and, on older units, delamination near the edges. Confirm the speakers, cameras and every button work.

Value. iPads hold value well and last for years of software support, so a used one two or three generations old is usually far better value than a new base model, typically 35-50% below the original price.

For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one. A few models read "above" instead: they now cost more used than they did new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
