Ask for the page count before anything else. Every laser printer stores it and prints it on a configuration page, and it is the only honest odometer these have. Under 10,000 pages on a workgroup machine rated for 50,000 a month is barely run in. A seller who will not print that page usually knows why. Then ask how much toner is left, because a machine arriving with a starter cartridge at 15 percent is a machine that needs a $60 purchase on day one, and on any inkjet that has sat unused ask whether it prints a clean test page, since dried heads are the single most common reason a cheap inkjet is cheap.

How to buy a used printer

The printer is not what you are paying for. Over three years the consumables usually cost several times the machine, which is why a $30 inkjet can be the expensive choice and a $90 laser the cheap one. Work out the cost per page for the model you are looking at before you look at the price of the printer, because that is the number you will actually be paying, month after month.

Page count is the odometer, and it is printed on the machine. Any laser will print a configuration or device-status page showing total pages. Ask for a photo of it. Twenty thousand pages on a machine rated for a 50,000-page monthly duty cycle is nothing; the same number on a small home model is most of its life. This one question separates the bargains from the tired ones and almost nobody asks it.

Starter toner is not toner. New printers ship with a partly filled cartridge, and a used one has whatever is left of it. "Includes toner" can mean 200 pages or 3,000. Ask what the toner level reads, and price a replacement before you bid, since on the cheaper models a full set of cartridges genuinely costs more than the printer just sold for.

Lasers are the used buy, inkjets are the gamble. A laser has no wet parts to dry out, so one that has sat in a cupboard for two years works. An inkjet that has sat for two years has dried heads, and on many models the head is not user-replaceable, which makes the whole thing scrap. If you want an inkjet, buy one that the seller confirms prints a clean nozzle-check page today.

Check the driver situation on anything older. These outlive their software. A printer from 2014 may have no current macOS driver, and manufacturers drop support quietly. Look for the model on the maker's support page before buying, and prefer models that speak a standard language like AirPrint or PostScript, since those keep working long after the branded driver stops.

Value. Office lasers are the best value on this page by a distance. They are built for tens of thousands of pages, businesses replace them on a schedule rather than on failure, and the result is a steady supply of machines with most of their life left going for a fraction of new.

What you pay for the printer is the smaller half of the bill. The cheapest printers to run works out two years of cartridges as well, which is where a bargain machine usually stops being one.

Common questions

Where do these prices come from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price, so nothing here is an estimate.

What is the single most useful question to ask?

What is the total page count. Every laser stores it and will print it on a configuration page, and it is the only real measure of how much life is left. A photo of that page tells you more than the condition description does.

Is a used printer actually cheaper?

Only if you count the consumables. The machine is a small part of what you spend over three years, so a cheap inkjet with expensive carts costs far more than a slightly dearer laser. Work out the cost per page first, then look at the price of the printer.

Laser or inkjet, buying used?

Laser, unless you specifically need photo output. Toner does not dry, so a laser that has sat unused for two years still works. An inkjet in the same cupboard has dried print heads, and on a lot of models the head cannot be replaced, which writes off the machine.

What does 'includes toner' actually mean?

Anywhere between almost nothing and a full cartridge. New printers ship with a partly filled starter, and a used one has whatever remains. Ask for the toner level percentage and price a replacement before bidding, because on the cheaper models a full set costs more than the printer does.

Will an older model still work with my computer?

Check before you buy. Printers outlive their drivers and support gets dropped quietly, so a 2014 model may have nothing current for macOS. Models that speak AirPrint or PostScript are the safer bet, because those keep working without a branded driver.
